On
April
5
1998,
when
the
Mars
Global
Surveyor
(MGS)
re-imaged
the
Face
after
over
twenty
years,
a
controversy
erupted
that
has
felt
at
times
like
a
war,
for
many
of
us
involved.
On
Planetary
Mysteries
I
received
and
continue
to
receive
many
angry
emails
from
the
public,
claiming
that
NASA
"somehow
destroyed
the
Face!"
In
March
of
2000,
I
wrote
an
editorial,
Proof
that
NASA
Did
Not
Blow
up
the
Face!
(with
a
link
from
the
Enterprise
Mission)
refuting
the
suggestion
by
some
that
NASA
had
even
used
a
nuclear
device.
My
first
MGS
MarsFace
Sculpture,
a
3D
analog
in
clay
of
the
MGS
Face
image
(MOC-22003)
proves
conclusively
that
this
simply
is
not
so.
The
Sculpture
demonstrates
that
it
is
possible
to
use
subtleties
in
structure
to
sculpt
with
"the
movement
of
the
light
source"
--
just
as
the
ancients
did
in
the
Andes
mountains
on
a
high
plateau
called
"Marcahuasi."
It
is
time
we
put
to
rest
the
notion
that
the
MGS
images
are
somehow
not
authentic,
because
"at
first
glance"
they
don't
seem
to
match
the
early
Viking
images
of
the
Face.
This
is
a
distraction
from
examining
the
contents
of
the
MGS
images
and
exploring
now
the
larger
significance
of
such
a
find.
While
we
are
focused
outside,
still
endlessly
debating
"but
is
it
real?!,"
the
implications
from
our
deeper
awareness
within
are
rapidly
approaching
critical
mass.
We
now
need
to
pay
attention
to
and
consider
the
significance
of
"the
Face"
as
a
real
work
of
art
--
and
(since,
at
least
a
part
of
it
looks
like
"us,"
or
"what
we
once
were")
ponder
deeply
its
relationship
to
us.
The
real
question
is
no
longer,
"is
it
real?"
The
real
question
is:
"What
are
we
to
It
and
It
to
us?"
This
of
course
will
lead
us
to
the
even
more
important
question:
"What
are
we
to
each
other
--
and
how
do
we
approach,
encounter
and
interact
with
our
own
multidimensional
selves
in
an
increasingly
demonstrable
multidimensional
Universe,
where
such
extraordinary
monuments
at
least
one
apparently
to
us
--
can
actually
exist
on
the
surface
of
a
nearby
planet?"
The
light
studies
on
the
Sculpture
(seen
below)
demonstrate
that:
1-
Even
though
the
lighting
changes
so
dramatically,
the
visage
of
the
Face
--
this
latest
MGS
image
(E03-00824)
--
is
nonetheless
an
authentic
NASA
photo
of
the
Face
on
Mars.
2.-
The
"changes"
in
appearance
are
due
to
the
movement
of
sunlight
and
are
most
likely
deliberate,
designed
by
the
"builders"
to
do
just
that.

When
I
first
presented
my
initial
findings
regarding
the
MGS
Mars
Face
sculpture
(in
a
1998
slide
show
at
the
Albuquerque
Cydonia
Conference,
at
the
University
of
New
Mexico
together
with
David
Kepkie's
and
his
3D
CAD
Model),
we
both
demonstrated
the
effects
of
this
critical
"movement
of
the
light."
We
proved
conclusively
how
even
small
changes
in
lighting
angle
can
dramatically
alter
the
overall
appearance
of
the
Face
--
at
times
making
even
the
mouth
appear
to
disappear.

The
asymmetry
of
the
new
MGS
Face
is
in
faithful
alignment
with
the
Viking
data.
THE
MGS
images
CONFIRM
my
prediction.

THE
BOTTOM
LINE
EVERYTHING
THAT
IS
IN
THE
VIKING
PHOTOS
IS
RECORDED
IN
THE
MGS
PHOTOS
1-
In
the
initial
MGS
98
image
(MOC-22003),
no
matter
how
faint
(lacking
in
contrast)
its
first
appearance
on
the
scene,
I
could
see
lines
and
information
that
confirmed
what
I
was
seeing
in
the
Viking
high
sun
angle,
and
had
actually
included
in
my
original
sculpture.
2-When
I
incorporated
the
98
MGS
data
into
the
revised
sculpture
--
by
simply
rotating
the
light
source,
I
could
then
accurately
duplicate
all
three
NASA
sun
angles
(BOTH
NASA
VIKING
IMAGES,
AND
THE
98
MGS
IMAGE
22003).
NOTHING
IS
LOST
FROM
THE
VIKING
IMAGES
IN
THE
MGS
IMAGE.
While
I
do
believe
that
NASA
has
not
always
been
forthcoming
in
delivering
the
images
on
time
or
in
the
best
resolution
with
all
the
data
associated;
I
am
convinced
beyond
a
doubt
that
all
of
the
MGS
images
we
have
seen
are
consistent
with
the
original
Viking
data.
If
this
were
not
so,
it
would
be
impossible
to
identify
key
"control
points"
on
each
succeeding
image,
that
match
perfectly
with
the
original
two
Viking
frames.
Below
are
images
of
the
original
NASA
data
[the
two
Viking
images
(hi
and
lo)],
the
orthorectified
MGS
by
Dr.
Mark
J.
Carlotto
&
Kynthia
(MOC-22003),
and
the
latest
full
face
MGS
(E03-00824).
The
blurred
images
of
the
sculpture
are
a
way
of
"back
engineering"
to
replicate
the
low
resolution
of
the
original
Viking
images.
Compare
the
details
carefully,
and
then
come
to
your
own
conclusion:
has
NASA
tampered
with
this
evidence?
Or,
is
this
just
another
distraction
to
keep
us
from
considering
the
more
profound,
authentic
mystery
the
ultimate
meaning
of
the
Face
on
Mars?
